Yordan’s Cherwell Journey: A Passion for History and Politics

Yordan, a recent graduate from Cherwell College Oxford, reflects on his two years of study, having successfully completed A-Levels in Geography, Politics, and History. Originally from Bulgaria, Yordan’s choice of subjects was deeply personal, inspired by his family’s passion for history and politics. “My father gave me my love for history, and my grandfather instilled in me a passion for politics,” Yordan explained during an interview. His interest in these subjects stems from a deep-rooted curiosity about how the world works and how societies interact, something that has fascinated him from a young age.

After his time at Cherwell, Yordan has been offered places at prestigious universities, with Queen Mary University of London as his first choice and University College London (UCL) as his backup option. Both universities are located in London, and Yordan is keen to remain in the UK, close to Oxford where he has spent the last two transformative years. At university, Yordan will continue his exploration of the humanities, after applying for History, Politics, and International Relations.

Yordan’s time at Cherwell was not just marked by academic success in his core subjects; he also undertook an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a rigorous research-based project. His EPQ was focused on the ideological shifts within Bulgaria, examining the transitions between monarchism, communism, and democracy. “I looked at how these ideologies evolved not just in Bulgaria but extended into Eastern Europe as well,” he explained. His project showcased his critical thinking and deep understanding of political history, highlighting his ability to delve into complex topics with insight and precision.

When asked to sum up his experience at Cherwell College Oxford in one word, Yordan didn’t hesitate. “Unforgettable,” he said, reflecting on how the college helped shape him both academically and personally. You become part of a community here. You’re given the space to develop independence while having a great support system.

Throughout his time at Cherwell, Yordan remained an integral part of the college’s academic and social community. His combination of intellectual curiosity, dedication, and passion made him a standout student. Not only did he excel academically, but his ability to balance multiple subjects with a personal research project like his EPQ shows his capacity for hard work and commitment.

As Yordan prepares to embark on the next stage of his academic journey, studying at a university in London, his future in the world of politics and international relations looks bright. His ability to link the past with the present, and understand the intricate workings of societies, will no doubt serve him well as he moves forward.
