Martin Roberts, Classics & Humanities

I was brought up and educated in Oxford, first at a local primary school and then at Magdalen College School, from where I won an Exhibition to read Literae Humaniores (Classics) at Jesus College, Oxford. I then completed a further year’s study at Oxford to achieve a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education to add to my MA degree.
My first teaching post was at Bristol Grammar School, followed by many years at New College School, Oxford and Winchester House School, Brackley. In all that time, I also taught individual students at Edward Greene’s Tutorial Establishment and Harris Manchester College, Oxford as well as a wide range of private students of all ages from four upwards.
My teaching has not only been in the big four Classical subjects: Latin, Classical Greek, Ancient History and Classical Civilisation, but has also included English, History, Maths and Thinking Skills/Debating at a variety of levels.
I came to Cherwell College in 2022 and enjoy the opportunity to spread the study of the Classical World as widely as possible in an independent establishment and to be involved in whatever projects may present themselves.
My wife and I have two adult children and in our spare time we enjoy maintaining a squadron of classic cars, passion for railways ancient and modern, tending an allotment, involvement in local politics and breeding beloved and somewhat boisterous Dalmatian dogs.
